UWF Book Club
The Book Club will meet Saturday, January 28, at 10 a.m. in the Church House for a discussion of Sarah Orne Jewett’s “The Country of the Pointed Firs.” Published in 1896, the book is set in the fictional Dunnet Landing, Maine. The unnamed narrator returns from her earlier summer visits to the town and finds lodging with Almira Todd, a local woman well versed in herbs and plants. The two of them begin a series of adventures where the narrator is introduced to the people and places of Mrs. Todd’s Maine. Clearly, the book influenced the work of contemporary writer Elizabeth Strout. This vision of a Maine now over a hundred years ago will offer us much upon which to reflect. In the words of Willa Cather, this novel is one of three upon which all American Literature begins. Please let Margaret know if you plan to attend.
